Eyes and Sun Damage
However, the sun is also responsible for causing a number of health issues such as sun burns, skin cancer, and premature aging. Most people know to apply sunscreen before spending a long period outdoors.
GOLDEN, CO, November 13, 2011 /Vision-Eye Care PR News/ -- The sun is a mixed blessing. Of course, without the sun, life would not exist, and who doesn't love soaking up some rays on nice summer afternoons? However, the sun is also responsible for causing a number of health issues such as sun burns, skin cancer, and premature aging. Most people know to apply sunscreen before spending a long period outdoors. Many people add sunglasses to help prevent the discomfort of squinting. What you may not know is that, like your skin, your eyes can be impacted by UV light.
The lens of your eye is not like your skin. You can apply lotion to your skin to help reduce the damages done by the sun. This is not the case with eyes and sun damage. In fact, your eye's lens cannot repair itself, meaning that over time, sun damage can lead to serious vision disorders including complete vision loss.
Risks of Sun Damage to Your Eyes
Common disorders caused to unprotected eyes by the sun include:
• Sunburn of the cornea
• Skin cancer around the eyes
• Macular degeneration
• Cataracts
It is not safe to assume that your eyes are any less prone to damage during the winter. Your eyes can be impacted by both UV light and blue light rays. If you spend time outdoors during the winter, it is just as important to wear protective eyewear as it is during the summer to prevent damage to your eyes.
Protecting Your Eyes
The easiest way to protect your eyes from sun damage is to wear sunglasses. Keep in mind that not all sunglasses are created equal. This is one of those purchases that can be justifiably more expensive. You need sunglasses that fit close to your eyes and contain large lenses. These styles can be found in almost every store in America, but may not provide you with the true protection you need.
An ophthalmologist will carry sunglasses that not only fit appropriately, but also block 100 percent of UV and blue light rays. This is equally important as coverage. Having sunglasses that cover your eyes but do not provide adequate protection is entirely useless.
Your local eye doctor should have a wide selection of sunglasses to choose from, and they may not be as expensive as you think. Several brands offer selections starting around $40, a small price to pay to ensure optimal vision well into the future.
